July 1, 2024 (Lonavala): A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Lonavala on Sunday afternoon, leaving a family shattered. Five members of the Ansari family, visiting from Pune, were swept away by strong currents near Bhushi Dam, a popular tourist destination.
Disturbing videos circulating online show the family struggling in the water. The sudden rise in water levels, likely due to recent heavy rains, caught them off guard. While five people initially got caught in the current, three managed to escape.
Sadly, the remaining two adults and three children were not as fortunate. Search and rescue teams arrived swiftly at the scene, and a relentless search operation began.
Devastating Loss
With heavy hearts, authorities confirmed the recovery of three bodies. Shahista Ansari, 36, Amima Ansari, 13, and Umera Ansari, 8, were found downstream in the reservoir. The search for the remaining two members, a four-year-old boy named Adnan Ansari and a nine-year-old girl named Maria Sayyad, continues relentlessly.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the Ansari family during this incredibly difficult time,” said Superintendent Pankaj Deshmukh of the Pune Rural Police. “We are deploying all available resources to locate the missing children. Rescue teams are working tirelessly, and we remain hopeful for a positive outcome.”
Community in Shock
The news of the tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond. People across India are offering prayers and expressing their support for the grieving family.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of underestimating the power of water, especially during monsoon season. Tourists are urged to exercise caution near waterfalls and flooded areas, and to always follow posted safety guidelines.
Frantic Search Continues
As the search for Adnan and Maria enters its second day, hope remains strong. Rescue teams are combing the area by boat and on foot, utilizing sonar technology and search dogs to cover as much ground as possible.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information about the missing children to come forward immediately.
This tragedy highlights the importance of water safety education and responsible tourism practices. Lonavala, known for its scenic beauty, can become treacherous during periods of heavy rainfall.
The entire nation waits with bated breath for news on the missing children. We pray for their safe return and offer our deepest condolences to the Ansari family for their unimaginable loss.
